FEEDBACK ON ASSIGNMENT 02
The Catcher in the Rye by T. D. Salinger
Dear college student
In this assignment you were asked to find three instances of вЂgoodbyes' that Holden makes in the novel, including the one in the question. You were asked to make records on these types of departures, then to write an essay, using these notes, on Holden's attitude to loss and goodbyes.
As the case generally in most complex novels such as this 1, it is not usually easy to isolate вЂthemes' and ideas in this manner. The ideas of loss and of allowing go, of departures and leave takings, tell you the whole new, and are intertwined with other concepts and hair strands.
If you look at the section around the novel in the study guidebook, as you had been instructed to perform, you would include learnt that novel is an example of a Bildungsroman, or perhaps вЂa " coming-of-age” story. The main figure, Holden Caulfield, is shifting from a situation of " innocence” (in childhood, adolescence) to one of " experience” (in adulthood). The term Bildungsroman denotes a novel of all-around self-development. ' (Study Guide for ENG1501). Read again the section on page 62 dealing with the bildungsroman: you will observe in level 2 that вЂTo inspire the hero or heroine on to their journey, some kind of loss or discontent must jar all of them at an early stage away from the home or family setting' (p. 62). Holden is in a stage in his your life where he understands that growing up means a loss in innocence. What might the loss which has spurred Holden in the journey end up being?
It can be asserted that the finest loss that Holden has suffered is the death of his brother, Allie. Holden's lack of ability to come to conditions with Allie's death, to take the loss, is definitely central for the novel. Circumstances which underline this range from the occasion on which Holden publishes articles about Allie's baseball mitt when writing an composition for Stradlater (Chapter 5). This show reveals Holden's obsession with death and loss. Decide if you can find various other examples inside the novel which will show us this preoccupation, for example Holden's thoughts about Adam Castle, a skinny boy who also jumped into the garbage at institution and droped to his death. What does this occurrence and Holden's memory than it tell us about Holden's frame of mind to damage?

Linked to this fear of fatality is Holden's fear of adult life and giving the safety of childhood and adolescence behind. He respect children as innocent and unspoilt. The adults he knows and meets are all, in his opinion, вЂphony' somehow – by contrast, children are still pure and untouched by the dishonesty he sees in adults. He would like to save kids, and unconsciously himself, by having to lose their purity. Find good examples in the book of how this individual tries to get away growing up and needing to lose this state of innocence. An example is his fantasy of running apart to live in the woods with Sally, for instance. Naturally , this idea of the child years as pure and blameless is as problematic as his condemnation from the entire adult world as phony, but it really allows him to avoid the things which frighten him most regarding adulthood, things like sex, intimacy and fatality.
There are additional, more literal, goodbyes inside the novel:
•
Consider Holden's visit to Mister Spencer in chapter 2 . Read the complete chapter properly, and then pay out particular attention to the last webpage – notice the change in Holden's strengthen compared to the remaining portion of the chapter. How can this phase illustrate Holden's fear of death and getting old? What other feelings does this check out stir up in him and just how does this section add to the understanding of his attitudes to loss and leave choosing?
•
The ducks within the lake in Central Recreation area are a repeating motif – what do they will suggest about Holden's fears of loss?
•
The last few chapters of the novel, Chapter twenty-five in particular, though, are perhaps the most disclosing. Read all of them...
